Anaal Nathrakh
Anaal Nathrakh is a British extreme metal band formed in Birmingham, England, in 1999 by multi-instrumentalist Mick Kenney and vocalist Dave Hunt (also known as V.I.T.R.I.O.L.). The band's name is derived from the Irish phrase "anál nathrach," meaning "serpent’s breath," famously featured in the incantation from John Boorman's 1981 film "Excalibur." Anaal Nathrakh is recognized for blending elements of black metal, grindcore, industrial, and death metal.
Initially influenced by Norwegian black metal acts such as Mayhem, Burzum, and Darkthrone, Anaal Nathrakh began their career by recording two demos in 1999, which were later compiled and released as an album. The duo released their debut full-length, "The Codex Necro," in 2001, noted for its intense, chaotic sound. Their second album, "Domine Non Es Dignus," was released in 2004 on the French label Season of Mist. The band continued to develop their sound on the 2006 release "Eschaton," which included guest performances by Shane Embury (Napalm Death) and Attila Csihar (Mayhem).
In October 2007, Anaal Nathrakh released "Hell Is Empty, and All the Devils Are Here" through FETO Records, which included guest vocals by Joe Horvath of Circle of Dead Children. The band's association with Candlelight Records was announced in 2009, and they subsequently released "In the Constellation of the Black Widow," featuring a guest appearance by Zeitgeist Memento of Repvblika.
Anaal Nathrakh continued their prolific output with "Passion" (2011) and "Vanitas" (2012). In 2014, they completed and released "Desideratum" after signing to Metal Blade Records earlier that year. Their ninth album, "The Whole of the Law," debuted on 28 October 2016. The band's tenth studio album, "A New Kind of Horror," was released on 28 September 2018. In early 2020, Anaal Nathrakh recorded their eleventh album, "Endarkenment," which was released on 2 October 2020.
Anaal Nathrakh is primarily a studio-based project, though they have performed live with session musicians. The main members are Mick Kenney (guitars, bass, programming, production) and Dave Hunt (vocals, lyrics). Their work is recognized for its bleak, apocalyptic themes and aggressive musical style.
Mick Kenney has also participated in several other bands and projects, including Born to Murder the World, Make Them Die Slowly, Mistress, Monkeys Are Machine Guns, Fukpig, Professor Fate, Suffer Well, and Kordhell.
